Motel Mozaïque

museumnacht 2010

In co-operation with Motel Mozaique V!P's organized some very special activities around the exhibition of Michael Spencer Jones at V!P's Rotterdam.

Jim Marshall, one of rock's most iconic photographers, has died.

He passed away in his sleep Tuesday night 23 March in New York.

Marshall had more than 500 album covers to his credit. The San Francisco resident was best-known for his iconic images from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and 1969's Woodstock, where as an official photographer he captured The Who tearing up the stage at sunrise.
Marshall also was the only photographer granted backstage access at what turned out to be the final Beatles concert, at San Francisco's Candlestick Park in 1966. Good timing and his rapport with musicians also helped him catch Johnny Cash memorably "flipping the bird" at a 1969 performance at San Quentin Prison.
Other famous subjects included Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and The Rolling Stones.

"This 'career' has never been just a job — it's been my life," Marshall remarked on his website.
Born in Chicago on Feb. 3, 1936, Marshall moved with his parents at age 2 to San Francisco's Fillmore District, then the heart of the city's jazz scene. He bought the first of his beloved Leica cameras in 1959, and a year later, during what he would describe as a "life-changing meeting" with saxophonist John Coltrane, he found his professional calling.
Before his lens discovered rock-and-roll, Marshall continued to find inspiration in jazz musicians, including Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. He also depicted poverty in rural Appalachia and the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi during the early 1960s.
Marshall spent two years living in New York, but returned to San Francisco in time to witness the birth of the 1960s counterculture and to meet young talent like Hendrix, Joplin and Jefferson Airplane during the city's Summer of Love.

Jim Marshall had a solo exhibition at V!P's Gallery Rotterdam in 2006, for which occasion he came to the gallery for 5 days, doing promotion work and interviews. With his fantastic stories and his quirky outlook on life, these 5 days are etched in our memory. We will not forget him.

V!P's on location in Paris

On Friday night 6 March V!P's Gallery had a one night exhibition with the Kate Moss photos by Mick Rock in the Salon Berlioz of the Hotel Intercontinental in Paris during the Paris Fashion Week. When you look at the photo of the Salon Berlioz you can imagine that this venue was the most impressive location where V!P's Gallery ever had an exhibition. The evening has been organized by Cyril Peret (Don't Tell my Booker events) with whom V!P's Gallery has collaborated on a few events in the past and more to follow in the coming months.

Opening Stanley Donwood exhibition V!P's Amsterdam

Wednesday July 2nd 2008 saw the premiere of Stanley Donwoods work in the newly opened V!P's Amsterdam. The exhibition contains quite a few never before seen works and has so far been visited by the likes of Thom Yorke, Colin Greenwood, Michael Stipe and David Belisle.

Colin Greenwood (Radiohead) visits Stanley Donwoods exhibition                   Photo by Avi Sewnarain.

Thom Yorke being Donwoods long-time collaborator was very pleased to see the exhibition as a cultural stop whilst exploring Amsterdam by bike and Colin Greenwood claimed to be happy to see the works outside of the shed. As both Radiohead-musicians had not yet attended an exhibition by Stanley Donwood.

Michael Stipe was rumoured to be running around Amsterdam with the exhibition invitation already on wednesday, trying to find V!P's gallery before going on stage himself at the Westerpark that same evening. And on thursday he stopped by the gallery to see the works that he had heard so much about. His visit to the gallery was covered on his own website http://remhq.com/news_story.php?id=827
On monday during the installation of the show Stanley created a piece of 'Street Art' on the gallery front. Fans, tourists and many more people passed by and watched the creation of this art piece somewhat reminiscent of a performance.
Everybody's Happy Nowadays already welcomed more then 800 people.
